WebMD is a hypochondriac

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 15:12:17 PDT
WebMD makes itself out to be the victim of spiraling trends in the advertising industry, but analysts aren't so sure. WebMD's advertisers are drugmakers and other healthcare companies generally thought to be safe plays even in this economy.

Video Comments? No Thanks - 5 Reasons They Don't Work

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 15:31:33 PDT
Yesterday morning the web's largest web tech blog added video comments. About 24 hours later, video comments had turned into a mini-trend with another 80 blogs installing them. I wonder if they're really adding to the conversation. Here are 5 reasons why I don't particularly care for video comments out of the gate

Kremlin Rules At Expense of All Others, Putin Picks a Church James Hill for The New York Times By CLIFFORD J. LEVY Published: April 24, 2008 STARY OSKOL, Russia — It was not long after a Methodist church put down roots here that the troubles began.First came visits from agents of the F.S.B., a successor tothe K.G.B., who evidently saw a threat in a few dozen searching souls who liked to huddle in cramped apartments to read the Bible and, perhaps, drink a little tea. Local officials then lab

Corporate lawyers view W.Va. as having the worst legal system in the U.S., followed by La., Miss., Ala. and Ill., says a new survey. Reasons for low ratings include corruption, high awards, unpredictability, unfair judges and juries, and overburdened courts. The survey, sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, got responses from 957 senior corporate attorneys. It found the best legal climates ...

Tribune, TOC, Sun-Times On Beer & Cheese, Recipe Websites, Mass-Market Trends

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 15:59:41 PDT
We're looking at the Tribune, Time Out Chicago and Sun-Times dining sections this week, and they sure are a hodgepodge. We'll get to the reviews momentarily, but first, the substantive pieces: • Phil Vettel does some cultural analysis concerning Houlihan's makeover from cheesy mid-scale casual restaurant to soulless mid-scale casual restaurant Tribune] • Chris Borrelli colorfully compares breakfast sandwiches, and is surprised to find himself enjoying McD's new chicken and biscuit entry T

So how bad?

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:05:20 PDT
As things continue to get worse word comes that even Sam’s Club (owned by Wal-Mart) is beginning to limit the amount of rice that customers can purchased… better known as rationing its product. The two biggest U.S. warehouse retail chains are limiting how much rice customers can buy because of what Sam’s Club, a division of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., called on Wednesday “recent supply and demand trends.” The broader chain of Wal-Mart stores has no plans to limit food purchases, however. The move

Total systemic breakdown, then and now

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:09:00 PDT
When not reading blog posts about the bad news on new home sales or immersing myself in the latest commodity price spike, I have been reading, just for kicks, the late China scholar Frederic Wakeman Jr.'s master work: "The Great Enterprise: The Manchu Reconstruction of Imperial Order in Seventeenth-Century China." But my efforts to distract myself from the many dramas of 2008 have been unsuccessful. Just the first few pages of "The Great Enterprise" sparked so many synaptic connections with th

So…Tom’s are cool

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:11:59 PDT
credits: Settlement Heart So pirates know you aight. I’ve wanted a pair of Toms for a while; my first pair arrived about 20 minutes ago, perfect timing, since my slip-ons from Pearl River are totally soaked-through with sweat. Along with the super-comfortable shoes Toms sent a sticker and a flag, which I love mostly because it is blue ...]

Slack off at Work — Safe!

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:13:45 PDT
Slack off at Work — Safe! Here’s an amazing website-slash-service I just randomly found Googling myself…. workFRIENDLY.net! What is it? Well it looks a lot like a search engine but what it does it a lot cooler. Just enter in the URL of a site you want to visit and workFRIENDLY masks it into looking like a MS Word document! Now you can read your favorite websites while at work with reduced chance of getting caught by the boss. There is even a “boss” button to quickly switch out the content. Ch

Nows The Time to Scoop it Up!

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:13:45 PDT
Nows The Time to Scoop it Up! With the U.S housing market in a crunch, now is the best time to scoop up properties for a great deal. The only trick is that you need to be in the position to capitalize on it. If you are in debt or don’t have knowledge about real estate, then you can’t get in on the action. Foreclosures, Repossessions, even 1031 exchange deals can get you great properties with little impact to your financial situation — you just need to know how and be financially solvent. But

Is 450 ppm politically possible? Part 2.6: What is the impact of peak oil and peak coal?

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:16:02 PDT
Yesterday, my page views hit a peak — 35,000. I take that as a sign readers are very interested in this subject. Here I present calculations I haven’t seen anywhere else, and since different sources provide different numbers, please view this as a crude estimates. I welcome corrections.] The goal of this post is to explore how peak oil and, yes, peak coal might affect the world’s effort to stabilize CO2 concentrations. At recent growth rates for oil consumption, we are all but certain to pea

The renewed zoning debate

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:27:25 PDT
I feel compelled to respond to Sunday's Chronicle story on public support for zoning and the debate it has sparked in the paper (Kendall Miller/HRG response, former Mayor Bob Lanier response calling for a formal zoning vote (vs. the "backdoor zoning" sometimes being implemented piecemeal now), and pro-planning response to his response, Chronicle editorial board), but I'm not sure what to say that isn't going to be a repeat of everything I've been saying on this blog for three years. "Zoning" an

Ruhlman on Trends

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:35:36 PDT
Interesting stuff here: Michael Ruhlman called for readers to share with him what they thought were the next food trends. The return of lard, growing your own food, and making your own charcuterie, cheese and preserves were frequent suggestions. Can we add any here?

Inside Steve's Brain- customer-centric design thinking

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:41:24 PDT
Here's an overview of the new book that's just got released - Inside Steve's brain ( Nishad sent this to me a few hours ago). Personally, it tells me a lot about the way the man is thinking, pushing( the people around him), acting-on( his instincts) and executing( without being worried about what the world thinks about him). Customer-centric enterprises need to have customer-centric design thinking - the way their products need to be conceived, designed and delivered. Steve just does it with im

Steve Rubel on Managing Information Overload

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:43:24 PDT
I’ve always been proud of the fact that I keep my email in-box at no more than 100 but that’s getting hard to do. Right now it’s over 400. My feed reader has over 900 unread. Yeow. Although I’m an evangelist for using new media and various social mechanisms to stay connected I know people are having some trouble coping. Here’s a video interview with Steve Rubel on just this topic. Last week I appeared on the Brian Lehrer show talking about my role with Edelman Digital and how I track trends
